the eno-produced talking heads record 'more songs about buildings and food' (1978) left an outsized impression on us as we forged our identity. as a matter of fact, I tried to structure our live shows to be a seamless barrage of quick tunes in a matter not unlike the flow of tracks 1-6 of the record.

'nine' is a song about a building, rather, a girl that lived in a building.

the edifice in question was the brittany hall dormitory at nyu, which, if I remember correctly, stands on the northwest corner of b'way and 10th st.

the female in question lived on the ninth floor, and I came up with the lyrics whilst wondering if she was home. (probably JUST before I got a cell phone in 2001).

led zeppelin's 'physical graffiti' was playing on my portable 'spaceship stereo' (a birthday gift from dr. hale) while I drafted the lyrics in my notebook, hence the allusion to 'robert plant still singing the blues'.

the proceeding five tracks are a medley of songs from the july 28, 2005 performance at piano's.
