believe it or not, this song started out as a cover of kate bush's 'running up that hill'.
in 2004, as we were recording what would become the '6 songs EP', I decided the band should record the entire first half of bush's 'hounds of love' album from 1984. I had discovered the record the year before and I was appropriately spellbound. I began transcribing and rearranging the songs, getting only as far as 'cloudbusting' before things got too busy with trick to continue.
we had been working on this jazzy-shuffle-bluesy rhythm for a long time, and even had a secret name for this distinct arrangement quality: 'ta-dozzle'.
ta-dozzle implied a sort of tight, gay, cabaret-like relationship to a big band rhythm. it lives somewhere between little richard, mitch mitchell and paul mccartney.
we had performed the ta-dozzle version of 'running up that hill' several times at piano's when one Morning-After, as I pimpsauntered down manhattan avenue on an early spring day, I found myself singing the 'sex on me' chorus over the kate bush chords.
